Welcome to the FRS Elbferry Glückstadt-Wischhafen.
For over 100 years we have been reliably connecting Schleswig-Holstein with Lower Saxony all year round.

One of the outstanding qualities of the founder of the Elbferry, Caphoornier and Captain Ernst Sturm, was always striving for new horizons and finding new ways where others saw borders.

He exemplified these visionary abilities to his team, the company and his successors since he set up his own business in Glückstadt on 24 March 1919. The milk of Kehdinger farmers was transported to Hamburg, and even then, cars were taken along.

Today, four special large ferries transport over 600,000 vehicles annually from Glückstadt to Wischhafen and vice versa. With a fixed timetable as a floating Elbe-crossing of the B495 main road at the most favourable point between Hamburg and Cuxhaven.

According to the Ferry Association, the awareness of existing resources and the strategic entrepreneurial willpower positioned the company among the best German ferry companies.

Since autumn 2020, the Elbferry Glückstadt Wischhafen is part of FRS. The shipping company, which is also family-owned, will retain its traditional values and remains deeply attached to the region and its employees.

The roots of FRS go back to 1866, when the first steam ship passenger service on the Flensburg Fjord started under the flag of the company "Flensburg-Ekensunder Dampfschiffsgesellschaft" (FEDG). In 1935, "Förde Reederei GmbH" was founded by about 100 merchants from Flensburg in Northern Germany to supersede the promising business of FEDG in an emerging market.

The FRS has grown from a regional steamboat shipping company to an international successfully operating shipping company, operating 70 vessels and employing more than 2.000 employees. In recent years, FRS carried 7.9 million passengers and 2.1 million vehicles anually. Extensive experience and dedication characterize our work.
